I suggest putting a volt meter on and looking for voltage variation with the engine speed.
I had a similar issue with my 1995 900 except the dash lights would also dim and get bright again while driving and the idle was constant. I pulled out the dash light dimmer control and could get the dash lights to consistently stay bright by removing and recconnecting the electrical connector a few times. A few months later the problem reappeared. This time I removed the connector and turned each connector blade about 20 degrees to get a better contact. The problem has not reappeared for a year now.
