OK, so call me stupid - I finally got the oil pump housing off on my 95 900SET (I was having mucho trouble with a stuck cover) and in my excitement I forgot to note the gear orientations carefully before popping them out.
So I figured out the inner gear goes in with the extended flange toward the block, that was easy.
But the driven gear has one smooth face and one with small indents. Which way does that go on ?? Anyone ? Please !
This has been kindof covered before, but how does one position the oil seal ? Some posts say flush, others say look for the wear line and find a new position. The SAAB procs use a special tool so that is not a 'new' position, it is a definite location every time.
On the subject of big end cap nuts, I spoke to my dealer and he said they never replace them when doing rebuilds. At $90 for a set, I would like to avoid the expense since the $$ are adding up, but I would hate to have rods coming loose. I don't recall any mention of replacing them on Planotoff and similar excellent refs, but I wanted to throw this out.
On a separate note, I looked at all the timing and balance gear. With the exception of the timing chain drive sprocket, none of the other gears showed any signs of assymetric teeth, sharpening of points or any of the other wear indicators. The balace chain idler had a lot of slop and the guides had deep wear grooves. This is a 900SET with 115K miles.
So I will install new guides all around, new chains and the drive gear but reuse the rest. Clean the tensioners carefully.
I'm getting into the putting everything back together stage - excited and scary at once. I'm keeping stuff as clean as I can get them and double-checking my work as I go. PLenty of chances to mess up.
