The best way to check for sludge is to have the oil pan (sump) dropped to see whether the sludge is there. Second best, IMHO, is next time you change the oil, is a wire coat hanger bent to scrape the bottom of the oil pan through the drain plug hole. Also, you could remove the valve cover and check the condition there. However, no sludge there does not mean no sludge at all. But sludge there would be bad. Now, if you discover sludge, you are not necessarily *****ed. It depends on how much you find. What can you do? Well, some on here and elsewhere, would run a product called Auto-RX through the engine. Do a search and read what needs to be done. You could have the sump and oil screen cleaned and the oil system flushed. If you find no problems (or find them and correct them), a little preventative action is called for:
1) Use a good quality xW-40 synthetic oil and change at intervals of no more than 5000 mi. In your climate do not use anything less than xW-40.
2) Use a good quality filter, Purolator Pure One, Wix, NAPA Gold (made by Wix) and many others.
3) Make sure PCV revision #6 is installed. If not done already, do it!
IMHO, the sludge issue is not as common as it seems if monitoring these forums and basic preventative action is your best defense.
