Using regular gas in a 9-3

In response to escalating prices of US gasoline (yes, Europe, I know we are still cheaper than you) I have switched from Premium to Regular for my 2002 9-3. If there is a performance difference I sure can't observe it.
Conventional wisdom is that detonation is avoided by electronically retarding the ignition, with a corresponding marginal fall-off of power. I regularly travel Florida Hwy 27 between Haines City and Miami, a rural divided highway with long, open stretches of blacktop, sometimes almost empty of vehicles. With my radar detector in action I can engage in short bursts of full-throttle boost. Perhaps a stopwatch would correct me, but seat of the pants seems to say there is no tangible difference between fuel grades vis-a-vis performance.
Anyone else got an opinion or experiences?
