High revs for turbo-boost

I've been driving my 96 NG900seT convert. for a year now, and it just doesn't have the lower-end turbo-torque that my classic900turbo did. The real "boost" doesn't kick-in until it's over 3000rpm....and by then it's in the next gear. If I hold the automatic trans in 2nd or 3rd, the acceleration resembles cresting a hill...it accelerates up the hill on boost...crests...then whooossh the all sorts of torque after 3000rpm. The problem is that the automatic shifts typically at 2000-2500 rpm even in sport-mode.
Climbing up an entrance-ramp of the interstate I could use the boost to merge...but I've got to manually hold it in 2nd...when it wants to downshift to fouth.
Is the boost THAT BIASED to high revs? I'm usually driving around at 2000-2500rpm with the automatic....and I've never rev'd it over 4200rpm annually holding it in 2nd or 3rd. The shifter's not really set-up for manual shifting as it's a bit sloppy and notchy, even with a new cable. I'd feel better if it had a shift-position repeater on teh dash like the 9-3's....I have to "feel my way around" to know what gear it's in by how-much of the notch I can feel under the shifter-release below the boss. And I'm always afraid to push it accidentally into "neutral". Unlike my friend's Nissan, I'm leery of shifting between drive and neutral while the car's rolling, I've been told it's not good for the trans. and the pumps.
**dispair**......wish I could have found a nice NG900 with stick.
