Idler pulley mount broke off -- cause?

1999 9-3 SE LPT, ~120k.
The other day, I started the car in the morning and immediately heard a loud CLUNK. Opened the hood and found that the idler pulley mount had sheared off of the engine. Turns out this is part of the alternator mount bracket, and my local shop is getting me a replacement.
Meanwhile, I was wondering about why the mount would break. I checked the other pulleys, and they all seem to turn smoothly without any wobbles or rough spots. I replaced the tensioner pulley a few months ago, but it still seems good. The idler pulley is ruined (apparently was thrown against something and cracked) but it seems to turn OK.
Any thoughts? The bracket is aluminum, so could it just be fatigue?
Thanks,
Sam
