Please could you clarify a couple of points:-
1) Is this with the ignition switch 'on' and the eninge not running and also is the wire disconnected from the alternator. If this is the case you are getting a slight voltage drop caused by a small current going throuh the battery cluster bulb - What type of voltagemeter - analog or digital
2) If this is with the engine running and wire connected then it should be OK and the Battery bulb should be 'off'
