Chuck Andrews from Andrews of Princeton has written several articles for Nines about the prediliction for sludge in Saab engines. I am including a link to a listing of his Nines articles. In the article titled "End Sludge" he explains that oil pumps in post GM Saabs are much weaker than previous models, which is why they installed the finer mesh oil pickup screen. If you read the article "4 Cylinder Engines: 9-3 and 9-5" you'll see again why its not a good idea make bigger holes in the screen.
