Mechanic replaced the PCV with the latest version, cleaned out the works with solvent where he could and replaced a lot of hoses and tubing. Said there was some sludge so hardened they simply had to scrape it out, their cleaning solvent wouldn't even work. Oil uptake screen was plugged almost completely and had to be hand cleaned. He took some pictures which I'll share when/if he sends them to me. There is a tremendous difference in the engine sound (esp. valve noise which he cited as particularly sludged) when starting/running now. It'd been loud and getting louder for a while so this was a progressive failure rather than anything particularly sudden.
So be warned and be cautious even if you use synthetic at recommended intervals.
