Wayne,
I have almost the exact same problem. My wife's '99 Saab 9-3 was running okay but she told me she heard a strange sound and smelled hot rubber. I went to the car and noticed right off the power steering noise. She shut it off, I checked the pump and found it almost empty. The hot rubber smell I guess was the pully on the pump dragging from bad bearings/leaking. Anyway, in an attempt to start the car back up NOTHING. No starter grind, no solenoide sounds but all the lights come on, the antenna comes up, the alarm system (twice system) works, the fuel pump comes on when the key is turned but no start! The only thing I can figure is that it has to be electrical such as fuse or breaker or relay. The fuses are fine so I figure it's got to be a relay in the interior relay block. My problem is I am handicaped and I cannot get under the dash to removed the knee panel to get to the relay block. I have been waiting for 5 days for help to get this part done.
If anyone has anyother ideas, let me know. With everything working I know the switch must be okay, the battery is new so other than the relay I am at a loss. And once I get it started I have to tackle to power steering pump!!
