I can't imagine that there is a way to mess up installing the coil that you have that much height increase unless you installed new coils.
Or do you mean that there is that much more height from when the strut and coil were out compared to being installed. One tell tale sign of a broken coil is that the height of the front end is noticeably lower.
Which is also one of the reason for replacing them in pairs if you have a lot of miles on the coils, they wear out over time. One of my 900s right now needs both coils replaced because they both are broken. Granted 226,000 miles is well past for coils.
I believe the coil does most of the work and the strut just controls the rebound.
I think you got it right.
