difficulty getting strut back on

Hello All,
Decided to go ahead and do the front struts with the plan of removing the strut and then taking it up to the local shop and have them compress the coils and remove and reinsert the strut. Well when trying to reinstall the strut I am having a heck of a time getting the driveshaft lined up correctly to fit in hub as well as having the space of slipping ball joint nipple on. To get it on I would need to push down on control arm 3-4 inches to slip it on which I can't do. I have tightened the nuts at top and torqued them properly. So I am wondering if it is possible the shop did not correctly assemble the strut and it now sits 2-3 inches higher than when removed? Or am I missing something?
