I'll put up some information about the operation of reverse so you can visualize a bit of the problem here.
How reverse works:
Internally there is a separate shaft for the entire reverse assembly. The reverse shaft has three main components. The reverse pinion gear (driving gear), reverse syncro hub, and the reverse gear wheel (driven gear). The reverse pinion and 1st gear pinion are constantly meshed at all times. When you select reverse the syncro hub on the reverse shaft locks the reverse pinion and gear wheel to each other. Now the reverse gear wheel and the 1st/2nd gear syncro hub [which is on the output shaft] are constantly meshed and this is how we get reverse motion. This is straight from WIS.
If all your other gears are working fine or if your 1st and/or 2nd gear have become somewhat notchy as well then your problem is more likely internal then it is with you shifter alignment. I figure you don't want to hear this but this is the most probable cause in my book.
In my case I've been without reverse in all functional sense of 99%. I can only select reverse buy turning my car off and rowing through the gears till I can finally get into reverse. It's a good thing I have a spare trans in my garage for when I can no longer do that or my other gears drop out [which should't be to far out]. My box has been like this for the last 50k miles.
