I installed the MB Quart 164 6.5 midbass speakers in my door. I had the stock speakers (one blew out), and was also trying to find a midbass.
The MB Quarts fit into the SAAB plastic mounts nicely. With a little drilling, they might fit into the door. The plastic mounts stick out about an inch and a half, so there is zero problems with clearance in the back. I initially tried to fit the new speakers directly into the door, but was dissuaded by the drilling.
As others have stated, the sound quality isn't much of an improvement. Honestly, I'd search out junkyards for the stock speakers and the mount. The stock door speakers are not good quality, but are rated for between 30 and 50 watts. Between the mounts and the wiring harness, the stock ones work fine.
I got my MB quarts for about $50 on ebay, but I had the luxury of waiting several weeks until I installed it.
I'd also invest in some dynamat and/or foam to put as sound proofing behind the door cards.
