...if the oil pressure is bad, MAYBE throwing a new oil pump at it will fix the problem. Or not.

Could still be any of:

1. Timing cover (must remove head to replace)
2. Crank bearings (engine toast -- who wants to grind a crank and painstakingly attend to the bearings?)
3. Oil pickup tube clogged
4. Some other oil issue from elsewhere

The question is, how many more weekends, and how much more money, will it take to MAYBE fix the problem? That's why I'm leaning towards getting out now.

I have a strong feeling this car's balance shaft drive spat a nice chunk of sprocket into the oil pump, and has probably thoroughly scored the timing cover and oil pump, and probably wrecked the oil relief valve (this last being the probable culprit when low pressure is present).

But I'll give myself a few more days to mull the possibilities over.

It's worth noting that I've spent perhaps the last two months' weekends (and more) struggling with broken old cars, in the belief that "after this I'll be done for awhile." At some point, gotta quit putting myself through it.

Still, you make a good point. I might owe it to myself to at least inspect the relief valve, maybe drop the pan and look at the crank bearings. But after 11+ years of this, a car payment is starting to look better.

Too bad about the major falloff in Saab engine durability starting in the NG models. Just can't really count on these motors they way you used to.
