I'm getting some vibration in a 94 900 at highway speeds (60-65+) that I have been trying to pinpoint and have seen alot about the inner driver failing. There's a few other things I'm checking pertaining to this vibration such as brakes and the tire balance but those have been checked fairly recently and I'm really leaning towards the inner driver. I replaced the inner boot on the driver side when I got the car 20k ago as it was ripped, but the vibration started within the last 6k miles.
I've taken the inner joint apart and rotated the axle, in effect putting a each lobe of the tripod bearing in a different socket of the inner driver, and drove each configuration. Initially the vibration started at 65-70 and stopped around 90, and there was a tiny bit of vibration on braking. After the first turn the vibration started later, around 70 mph, but did not subside at 90, and the braking vibration worsened significantly. The third turn caused vibration starting at 60, I've only taken the car to 75 but it vibrates the whole time, and the braking shake is significant. The fact that the symptoms changed each time I moved the tripod bearing is really what has lead me to the inner driver diagnosis. Anyone have any comments on this, does the diagnosis sound correct?
From what I've read the inner driver should have some radial play, the Saab figure is 0.8 mm measured where the boot ends on the driver. I haven't measured mine yet but if it's out of spec, does that necessarily mean I have to replace the internal bushing, or is that only needed if the seal is leaking oil?
I'm also curious about rotational play in the inner driver. Should the tripod bearing fit perfectly snug in the driver, or should I be able to rotate the axle slightly if I'm holding the driver in place?
Thanks in advance for the help
