Most of the time it is not possible to just swap out a tonneau motor/gear box unit from another car without programming the new potentiometer settings into the TSAS computer.
The guy helping doesn't sound he is to hot on Saab's or maybe he just didn't have enough time to spend? Did he really program anything at all?
To do a full fledged programming of all the settings, yes, you do need to stop the top at certain positions measured with an old fashioned tape measure to program what's called over lap values. Most of the time though it is enough to just program the end position values for each piece of the top system.
I always use the cheat sheet that came with the Saab book to make it easier to write down, subtract and add to the different values before entering the numbers into the TSAS computer.
