I'd check the "o" rings on the fuel injectors or gaskets on fuel rail. If they're leaking it can evaporate pretty quickly (at least until it catches on fire) so you have to do it while it's running. I assume you've checked for puddles of fuel under the car and the fuel cap for tightness. On C900's the fuel cap used to leak vapors (with nothing visible to indicate wear)but I've not heard of it on NG/9-3's.
