the weakest link is ususally the knob (p/n 5331665)-- if that is stripped out the replacement can be strenghten by wrapping the ouside of the shaft with small gauge wire or tie wraps and epoxy to secure the wire or tie wrap. Next weakest point is now the "toilet-paper roll" shaft (p/n 4364279)...
some people have fabricated an all metal replacement for the shaft from a socket wrench flex extention
There is a TSB instructing how to disassemble and lub all the parts to minimize the binding but the only fix is to replace the entire heater/air exchange housing and connected parts (about $400 parts + 6-8 hrs labor) -it was a poor design by Saab's French vendor -- and was an warranty replacement item
a new design housing was available from about 2003 on...
