4 months ago, I started having trouble shifting into into reverse while running once the car warmed up (it went into reverse easily while when the car was cold)

This gradually deteriorated such that it became difficult to shift into any gears at normal operating temperature, and the clutch pedal gradually lost spring and was catching closer to the floor.

Finally, while driving in traffic, the clutch pedal lost all spring and the transmission was stuck in gear. I pulled over and shut off - fortunately, it was right in front of a shop that worked on SAABs, though not a specialist.

The mechanic thought it was a failed clutch cable, so he replaced that first.

This didn’t solve the problem, so he suspected that the pressure plate had failed. I had him replace the whole clutch. Upon inspection of the clutch mechanism, he said the plate had failed, but that the clutch itself had plenty of life left in it.

Once I got the car back, the clutch worked very nicely going forward - easy, smooth shifting, catching high in the release. However, I noticed that the car shuddered a bit when moving in reverse.

Yesterday, I started noticing the old symptoms returned that had started 4 months earlier: difficulty in shifting to reverse while running, the pedal catching lower toward the floor and even increased difficulty in going into first.

The car is now at a SAAB specialist and his first notion is that the new clutch cable has failed. I’m not so certain, given that the car is behaving exactly as it did previously when a new cable failed to resolve the problem.

Can it possibly be that the pressure plate failed in fewer than 1000 miles?

Is there anything else that could be wrong? This would be odd, since the car did run well after the new clutch was installed.

Any insight/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
