...it sure is a good opportunity to clean up in there and check for rust. I just did this and for the extra 10 minutes I'd say take it all off. The amount of leaves and crud that builds up in there is worth the work.
I vacuum and wash the firewall as well as give it a good wax to allow water to drain better (my car sits outside). I've also noticed that Saabs do begin to rust in here along the seam below the windscreen and at the fender/hood hinge mount. A shot of some rust proofing prevents that. I also grease up the wiper mechanism.
This time I tried cleaning the filter to re-use it. Not sure how well that will work. Seems to come pretty clean but it fluffs up a bit.
