Ruined Nokian tire - replace one, two, four?

Hi there,
Last year I bought a new set of 4 Nokian WR's for my '96 Saab 900SE Turbo. They have, probably, 12,000 miles on them. I've had a problem with a slow leak in one of the tires, which turned into a flat yesterday. Sad to say, when I brought it to have it repaired I was told that it had been ruined by driving on it too flat. Live and learn.
I'm really broke. If it's possible, I'd like to replace just one tire, but I am not sure that's an option; I certainly don't want to risk any kind of transmission damage. I was thinking that I would buy a pair, though I can hardly afford it (they're expensive tires). When I called the tire store just now, however, they told me that it was unsafe to do anything but order four tires. That doesn't sound right to me -- the rear tires are perfectly fine without much wear. Do they just want me to fork over $800? If it comes to that, I will just buy four cheapies, but I like feeling safe in snow with the Nokians. Thoughts?
