As far as your 97, I don't know when they started using "special" synthetic trans oil. I'm pretty sure it was already in use for 1999.

But the newer synthetic Saab MTF0063 was started somewhere mid-2001 model year. My 2001 (by VIN) had the old oil. I switched directly to Redline MTL with good results. The alternative was multiple drain/fill cycles if I wanted to switch to MTF0063.
