My 2001 9³ owners manual said the same thing. Lifetime manual-trans oil.
With better fluids, and better machined surfaces of working parts, I'm sure that fluids can last longer & longer. In fact, I've had engine oil analyzed in a couple Hondas, to support oil-change intervals upwards of 7k miles on non-synthetic. Why should transmissions be stuck with 1970s philosophy about oil-change intervals?
But I refuse to believe that any kind of working fluid is good FOREVER.
