In poking around the engine bay, I noticed that my 2001 9-3 base automatic appears to have two different MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensors. Well, technically only one of them could be a MAP sensor because it's mounted directly to the intake manifold, but here's where the confusion arises. The second sensor is mounted on a bracket near the vacuum pump (or distributor plug in a 5spd) - but has no wiring connected to it! I know I'm not the first to be puzzled by this, from looking at the post linked below.
The sensor on the intake manifold is part #90490743 as confirmed by EPC.
The unconnected sensor is part #9171497. EPC shows it exactly as it appears on my car, with a short rubber tube attached to the end of the sensor, except my car has no connector for it anywhere on the wiring harness.
My theory is that because this sensor is listed under the cylinder head assembly # which is shown for model years 00-02, but my intake manifold assembly # is only shown for 01-02, the sensor is just left over because they didn't want to change the cylinder head assembly. Seems strange, but I understand that updates in the supply chain can be a nightmare to implement.
The thing is...even if this was supposed to be the MAP sensor for 00 model year cars, where was it getting its reading from? Was the rubber tube somehow connected back to the intake manifold, or is this sensor supposed to measure atmospheric pressure?
Hopefully it's nothing to worry about, but it would be nice if someone could clear this up!
