Check out this link. This is what I used for most of my information when I upgraded the front speakers on my 2000 9-3 about 8 years ago. I replaced the dash speakers with Infinity Kappas. As my 9-3 did not have the door speakers or the OEM amp (mine is the base 9-3, not SE), added a small full range amp in the OEM amp location (had to construct my own bracket) and put full range Kenwood 6.5" speakers in the doors. I finally got around to replacing the rear speakers last year with JBL 6x9's.
I know some people have used component systems for the fronts and you might find more information on this board by searching for "component speakers". Other people have added an extra amp to handle more power than the head unit can provide and have mounted the amp in the hatch, under the front seat, or other locations. Richard's audio guide shows some examples.
As for finding 8 ohm speakers, I'm not sure as I have not been shopping for car speakers for a while and not sure of what is available these days.
