I had my 1998 900SE do the same thing. I removed the plastic black triangle inside the door and removed the mirror unit. I then mixed up a 2 part 5 minute epoxy like you find at the store that is clear one part and yellow another and used a pop sickle stick to mix and work it in behind the mirror and then I sat and gently applied pressure to the mirror while it set up. Having the mirror off helped me do this easier. I figured my defog portion would be toast but the glue transfers the heat just fine and still works.
