The bushings are on their way, but I think it's the rack which has play it in. It's wierd. Only 80K miles. If I lift up and down on the inner tie rod ends, there is vertical play. The mounting bolts for the inner tie rods move too, so I can see this isn't bushing slop; but the inner part of the rack moving. There is no lateral play in the rack or bushings so my steering is still tight. I just hear a bit of a clunk on bumps. It's the same noise as if I lift up and down on the inner tie rods...which move a decent amount. I've checked strut mounts, ball joints/control arms, and outer tie rods. All are OK. I guess I'll get a rebuilt rack and swap that out.
I'm a bit suprised at this as my wife's car has over 100K of inner city driving, and the original rack. I guess some parts just go bad...oh well.
