My wife's 99 9-3 convertible started having a problem last week. I bought a dryer vent brush at Lowes, bent the brush a little, then inserted it into the drain plug hole and worked it back and forth in the pan to try and scrub the bottom of the pickup screen. The oil light stays off now.
This wasn't the only thing that I did. I started by running a bottle of gunk crankcase cleaner through it (didn't fix the pressure problem). Since the light only came on after 10-15 minutes of 45-50mph driving, I figured it had something to do with the cooler and thermostat. I removed and inspected the lines and cooler, and while there did seem to be some leakage at the cooler, all were verified ok using a vacuum pump.
I attempted to drop the pan, but the subframe was in the way and didn't want to go that far yet. I ran my hand inside the pan and didn't feel any sludge, just oil. I refilled with a gallon of transmission fluid and cranked and idled a couple of times until warm. I then pour a can of seafoam and a quart of castrol syntech into the engine, ran until warm and then let it set overnight. The following night, I did the procedure with the dryer vent brush, changed the filter and filled with fresh oil. No oil light after 30 minutes of driving and appears to be fixed.
