I did it on a '97 900set. You don't have to remove ps lines. I copied the following from my notes when I was researching on this site - plenty of info here.
"There are two connections for the fan near the top of the radiator. One is low speed and the second is the high speed power. Pull the connectors and apply 12v power to each one to determine if your resistor is bad. The low speed uses the resistor and high speed goes straight through. If you want to replace the resistor you'll need to use a .25 ohm 50 watt"
I got my resistor at mouser.com and it was about .33 ohms and 50 watt.
