Think I finally blew my AC compressor. Help! Posted by Nicholas [Email] (#2995) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Nicholas) on Sat, 17 Apr 2010 13:29:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
In my ongoing saga of "no ac" on my 2000 9-3, I watched my compressor smoke and then "explode" yesterday.
Here is what I was doing. I found the AC fuse had been blown, so I replaced that. Also swapped the ACC relay with a working relay. I've disassembled reassembled the dash switches several time, shorted the pressure switch connection, etc. I've been doing all these things trying to get the A/C compressor to turn on because I thought it was OK.
On the compressor side, I found out a few days back that I could make it run and make the system blow cold air by connecting the red wire directly to the battery. Well, it seems it didn't work for long that way yesterday. I hooked it up thinking I could check the pressure switch in action with the compressor. At first the pressure shot around on the low side (as it had before) and eventually settled at about 40PSI while blowing sort of cold air. Then, before I knew it the compressor started to rattle and sounded strained and it started to literally smoke!
I disconnected everything and turned off the car. Before turning it back on, I hooked up yet another can of R-134 to the low side (counter intuitive) and started the compressor back up via direct wire. The pressure began to drop from "overcharge" as it filled and I thought I finally had things back working. However , all of a sudden it jumped around again and a sound pop and sound of refrigerant exploded somewhere near the compressor. All I could see was a big stain of the green dye around the lower radiator hose. It was really loud , and I still haven't jacked the car up yet to see where the explosion came from. Mind I have dumped several small cans of refrig into this compressor due to all this confusion with the readings I've been ggetting on the low side gauge I have. Basically , unless the compressor is running and running OK it seems I'd get a big overcharge reading.
At that point, I disco'd everything. Is there a pressure relief on the compressor or what probably is going on here? Is the compressor no good? How can I finally figure out what's wrong with this system? Thanks much for any help!
