If you're going to replace the entire compressor, make sure you check the terms of the warranty. Many remans will not honor the warranty unless the expansion valve is replaced at the same time and the system is flushed.
Unless you have a vacuum pump and gauges that can pull less than 50 microns for at least 30 or 45 minutes, you will have to take it to a shop (it's cheaper to pay someone else to do the vacuum and charge than to buy the pump and gauges - make sure you do not run the compressor until the shop vacs and charges the system. Just flush the system and replace the valve and compressor yourself to save some labor. You can get a flush kit from most parts stores like Autozone.
Also make sure you change the drier because the system will be open for some time. Also make sure you measure the oil that's in the old compressor so you can tell the shop how much was in it. Some remans come with an oil charge, but it's best to drain it because you don't know how much is in there compared to how much gets taken out with the old compressor.
