I did my clutch/bearing assembly only in car - that was about 2 years ago or so (knock on wood). In my case, I was 90 percent sure I was only having a problem with the bearing (pulley wobbled intermittently when the clutch engaged). I got mine (rebuilt clutch and bearing assembly) for about $50 from someplace in FL, but I don't remember where. If the best price you can find on the clutch assembly is that much, I would probably go whole hog as well and just swap the clutch assembly as you state.
Pretty straight forward, but make sure you have access to spacers as you have to make sure you have the proper clearance between clutch and plate. I borrowed the clutch tool from the local Autozone. IIRC it was pretty tight space-wise.
Also make sure you put the pressure in the right place when removing the old and pressing in the new - otherwise you'll damage the seals around the shaft and you'll have to replace the whole thing anyway because it will leak.
