After much thought, decisions on effort vs reward...etc...I decided to tackle the infamous bushing in the differential that supports the companion flange. Here are the details:

1. One of the hardest things was getting the trans drain plug out. Seriously...why is this right by the subframe??

2. Remove the strut assembly. It will just make things harder if you don't. Then, careful sawing until you can extract the bushing.

3. Driveshaft removal from the transmission. This is easy. No special pullers needed. I used a flat prybar directly from the bottom with the pry bar leveraged on a bolt head. Apply slight pressure and twist the axle back and forth. It will pop right out. This twisting collapses the spring clip on the bevel in back of the bushing, and the axle slides out easy.

4. Installing the new bushing: I kept it in the freezer in a small baggie. When I was ready, took it out and put it in a cup of ice. Before hand, I had my bearing driver (those cheap-o aluminum kits from the auto parts store), a lightweight hammer, and a small sledge hammer. I also coated the bushing carrier with some trans oil. Make sure the sledge is able to be handled with one hand. I started the bushing with the light hammer until it was set in, and going in straight. Then, picked up the sledge hammer and finished it off until flush. The whole installation should be quick. It was about 15 seconds for me. You don't want the bushing heating back up and getting stuck part way.

Well the bushing is in, the axle seal replaced, and the seal carrier re-installed. My companion flange looked fairly worn, and the test fit of the bushing was indicating too much slop for my liking. Since a new companion flange is ~$500 and special order, I decided to get a whole re-man axle unit for much less. I'll look this over, and make sure it's in good shape, and try this route. I typically replace with new OEM parts, but if the companion flange is good on the re-man that's all I need to take care of the slop.

I'll follow up when it's complete, and post some photos.
