The shift linkage has a vertical arm that is supported by a ball stud on right differential seal housing. Maybe this support arm has broken or popped off the ball stud. Also check for bolt in pinch clamp in linkage at firewall. Also check that bolt connecting linkage to gear selector rod at top of tranny is present. Lastly, if you can pull stick shifter out of its socket, then upper socket retainer on shifter ball is damaged or lost its wrap around spring.
