It's my #2 kid's daily driver. It has had conventional oil in it every 3K all its life. Have all the records from the PO (a neighbor). I switched it to Mobil 1 10/40 High Mileage, never dropped the pan. Certainly seems fine. No leaks.
As for you new ride...
I would go through it and do a full maintenance cycle to get it all to a known point.
> Oil and filter
> Plugs
> Air, fuel and cabin filters
> Flush coolant
> Flush brakes
> Maybe change transmission oil (you have a manual, so this is not critical)
> Consider replacing radiator and heater hoses if they seem weak.
> Check all vacuum hoses. If hard or cracked, replace (4mm or 5/32 tubing from the parts store)
> Get a reading on brake pads and rotors so you know if you need to be thinking about them.
> Look at exhaust system for leaks. Replace any weak or broken hangers.
> Might be a good idea to check or replace the serpentine belt and pulleys. The tensioner should be fine at 85K, but if you have the cash, it's not a bad idea to do it when the belt is off.
> Check the charge on the air conditioning system.
Now you're at a known point and know a lot about the car. Then go and enjoy it.
