I ran the short belt for a month in my '01 without any issues. I don't see why it couldn't be done for much, much longer, but your mileage may vary of course. The wrap around the other adjacent pulleys (water pump, power steering) seemed fine.
Perhaps the seals in the AC system might tend to dry out if not used for a long time, and be more prone to leaks when eventually used... but I'm just speculating, and still it should be no worse than those cars that don't have AC run during winter.
My car has auto climate control. I put it in 'econ' mode while running the short belt, so it would not make futile attempts to use the AC to regulate temperature.
Too bad about the mechanics. Removing and reinstalling the pulley is not a difficult procedure, but is finicky enough, and may require some specialized tools like a gear puller and lock ring plier, that it's not advisable for a first DIY experience. Maybe there is a saabnetter in your vicinity who can help.
