Still a few concerns... Posted by bender [Email] (#268) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bender) on Mon, 27 Sep 2010 20:22:36 In Reply to: Re: DIY front brakes, but on a Viggen. Ok, suppose I decide to go and do one side at a time. That means, I'll have to work with the jack, and not a jack stand (since the jack is at the jacking point). To remedy that, I have a jack that locks and "double as a jack stand," even though it's certainly not as good as one... That's concern number 1.
Then, do torque the caliper bolts (which are a high 80 feet-pounds) you have to turn the wheel completely to one side, to give you clearance for those bolts. One tire is on the ground, one tire is off. While turning the wheel, there may be a slight movement on the jack = dangerous.
I want to be able to do this with piece of mind of nothing going wrong. Biggest issue for me is the set up of the car. The job itself is a piece of cake. I've had my car slip off my jack once (yes, it happens and you learn) and don't want that to happen again! Left a scar on my tank.
Thanks for the reply Seth.
