New 9-3 owner: What fuel consumption should I expect?

...Considering my late lamented 9000 could easily deliver 35 mpg (Imperial) in mixed driving, and up to 42 mpg on a long motorway run, I'd hope that the lighter, more modern 9-3 (mine's a 2000 model in good nick) would be at least as good - but am I being naive? I've only had the car a few days so too early for me to calculate how much petrol it's actually drinking!
