I recently acquired a handbrake lever from a parts car and used it to replace mine, since the adjuster nut was seized and I ended up breaking the threaded pull-rod. Linked below are some pictures showing how it actually works.
The sensor is basically just a simple normally-closed pushbutton attached to the base plate of the mechanism. With the lever up, the switch is closed and grounds the circuit, triggering the dashboard light. With the lever down, the switch gets pushed down and that breaks the circuit.
In playing around with the switch, it really has no side-to-side movement. When the lever is down I see no way for the switch to pop up and momentarily complete the circuit. On the other hand, given that the contact is on the bottom of the switch, there is a chance that a loose piece of metal down inside your center console (a coin, maybe) could touch that contact and also touch ground.
Are you positive that it was the "BRAKE" warning light, and did you also hear the "ding-dong" chime sound? I've gotten that chime and the "!" warning light during hard right-hand cornering on an onramp, and it turned out my oil level was low which caused the pump to briefly lose pressure as the oil sloshed to the left.
