In my '99 9-3Vert, ATF level has to be much higher than the indicators in order to work properly. When I drained and changed ATF, I made sure to replace the same amount as drained out at every iteration. I experimented and tried to see what would happen if I only filled new fluid up to the marks: the car would slip very badly, especially when going up hill, probably due to lack of fluid/fluid-pressure. After I fill to the old level (same amount putting in as taken out), the tranny shifts very smoothly and the car accelerates very rapidly as it should.
