I can't say what went wrong with your automatic transmission. Are you sure the whinning sound is coming from the tranny? not, say, from power steering (level too low due to leak?) or belts? I don't think automatic transmission would whine in park.
What I found with my particular 9-3's transmission is that the markers on the dipstick are incorrect or not accurate for my particular car due to whatever happened in the past to the transmission fluid cavity of my particular car. By the time I put in as much ATF as was taken out, the fluid level was a good inch-plus above the markers for the given temperatures. I also tried to run the car with ATF level exactly at the dipstick marks, and found the car transmission slipping and unable / barely able to go up any incline on the road . . . symptomatic of ATF being too low and not having enough fluid pressure. I quickly filled it up to the level where the car had before draining.
