If you are afraid that your 2000 9-3 will be a nightmare, based on what? Internet?

Why do you think a 97 and older 850 would be any better.
They all have problems more or less and it comes down to how many miles a car have and how it has been repaired up until now.

Strut mounts, heater core, dash board breaking loose, upper motor mount, radiator, evaporator, cap-rotor-plugwires, swaybar links, control arms, timing belt, PCV systems, rear engine seal, odometer, ABS module are among a few things I replace on the 850 model. Maybe not on the same one but spread out over the ones I have seen.
