I own both cars and favor the Saab:
Complaints about the 850 (some of this fixed with the S70):
* Sponge like response when stepping on the accelerator.
* Fails to start randomly on damp days even in the garage, bought it new and was never able to get it corrected.
* Odd replacements even under warranty like throttle plates.
* CV joints went bad at 30K due to torn boots, they said my driving home in wet snow was the cause.
Good things about the 850:
* no rattles (body or doors)
* drives like it was on rails - zero drift.
* Lots of interior room.
* Less picky about tire balancing and shimmy problems over 50mph
I've added fuel and maintenance over the years including original purchase price and the Saab has done better at 100K, and when I have a 300+ mile trip the Saab is my choice simply due to my ability to replace things on the road (even ignition switches). The Volvo is less approachable for DYI at least to me. I've had the Volvo towed 4 times total, the Saab once and that was due to both remotes failing to open the doors.
