Not all the years used the same tranny fluid. The early NGs used motor oil. You can also use the '99 9-3 tranny. Check to make sure you have the right type. When I put in an expensive synthetic tranny fluid in my '95 it slipped like crazy on fast shifting.
I don't think Saab had yearly changes so don't get hung up on other's gruff.
All the years will fit. The only difference was the addition of the hydraulic clutch in the '98, maybe later '97s too. If you don't have it and you have the bucks, might be a nice time to add it. Though it is expensive compared to a clutch cable. But if you are pulling the tranny, put on a new cable (if no conversion), get new gaskets and such.
If you are pulling the engine to do it, (not much harder) it would be a good time for a new oil pump, gaskets & such.
Though, you are in a position that a tranny and labor might cost the same as a replacement. You could always transfer the interior bits as necessary. Plus, a tranny w/out a warranty may not help you sleep any better at night.
Check out Dimitry Platonoff's site for the tranny/engine removal, the clutch conversion first. It is an excellent resource for what parts you'd need.
I'd think about doing a little car shopping first. If you end up getting a different car you would at least get an idea if the tranny is good or not. And the engine of course.
I also think with that low of miles, you could part out your car and get more than it's worth as a whole—given time and space.
...I could go on all day. I was in your position last year. Ended up swapping an engine and tranny into a '98 I bought. Luckily, I had a spare car.
Good luck.
