You might try to feel for play in the wheel. Jack the car and try lifting the wheel, also turning it side to side. That might tell you which one it is.
My 9K needed a bearing last winter. During state safety inspection the tech felt extra play in the wheel when it was on the lift. Determined it wasn't a ball joint but the bearing. I never heard a thing, and I usually notice stuff like that, so it was probably just starting to go or just wasn't making much noise.
