I would try taking the remote fob off the key and just use the key to see if perhaps it is the fob somehow. Maybe a battery, or you hit the button by accident or something to that affect.
Your door handle could be that the catch behind it, is either broken or the metal bracket that connects it to the release has been dislodged. If the handle feels like it isn't connected to anything (hard to describe)-compare the action to the passenger side. I suspect that you just need to take the handle off and reinstall it correctly.
To take it off you need to pop off the bolt cover behind the lever. I suggest something like a tiny screwdriver that fits into the very tiny slot-be careful it is easy to scratch the cover when trying to pop it out. Trust me, I know.
Then you need a torx screwdriver or similar to unscrew the bolt.
To install it correctly, you need to place the door handle back in with it in the open position so that the "lever" on the handle lines up in the metal loop that connects to the
door lock. Put the bolt back in and you will know it is right when you can feel the tension on the latch.
If you can't see the metal bracket you will have to take the door panel off. There is a plastic clip the holds the bracket up which might have broken or etc and the bracket could have pivoted out of position.
I don't think they are in any way related.
