I followed your advice and was able to replace the idler pulley with no problems. However, the old part seems just fine and I am still getting a whining sound from the passenger side of the motor. I also bought a replacement tensioner pulley but it seems like that will be more difficult to do without removing the belt. I might try again tomorrow, as it was just too cold outside to keep going. Next summer, when I am sweating and cursing the bugs in my yard, I will try to remember just how nice it is to work out in the cold!
