Security System, just started working?

2001 9-3 SE. I recently purchased this car, the security system was not working. The key fob would not operate the door, nor trunk locks. Also the led in the dash was not blinking. I tried putting new batteries in the keys to re-sync them, which did not work.
However, for some reason the system just started working again. My wife took the car on a long (4 hour) drive today, when she arrived at her destination she accidentally hit the lock button the key, and the car locked and armed. I told her not to set it, just on the off chance it didn't want to disarm, which I imagine would render the car inert.
Sounds like an intermittent connection somewhere that just happened to make connection.
Where does the signal come from that causes the LED on the dash to illuminate? I initially thought the problem behind the keys not working was the receiver, which I have not yet had the opportunity to investigate. Would the receiver, if it were not receiving power, also cause the dash LED not to blink?
If the alarm system were armed, and then could not be disengaged, would unlocking the car manually disarm the system? I assume not as it didnt on my 900.
Any suggestions where to look would be appreciated.
Thank You
