It uses time and distance. I think on OG9-3 it was 1 year or 10,000 miles.
Do you know how to clear it? After turning on the car and when the "time for Service" message comes on, press and release the clear button on SID to first clear the message. Then press and hold the clear button. You will first get a beep and the message "cleared". Don't let off the clear button! keep holding the clear button until a second beep and the message "service" is displayed. Now you can let go of the button. the service indicator is cleared.
The problem with this system is if you do an oil change before the service message is displayed, the only way to reset the service counter is to use TECH2 scan tool.
